I guess I have always known about Green Grotto Caves. In fact, I often have memories of going on a boat within the cave. I’m not sure if that was my imagination working or it actually happened.
I went there sometime ago according to my mother. She supposedly had brought me there when I was four years old so it puzzles me a little that I would remember about that boat ride.
Anyway, let’s talk about what I had originally planned.. I’ve had until now a very vague memory of the Green Grotto Caves, therefore when the opportunity arose to visit St. Ann, it was first on my list.
It is a little way from Ocho Rios town so I had to take a taxi, which wasn’t expensive at all. It was about $200JMD($1.50 US). Although the sign is not hidden be sure to look out for it, coming from Ocho Rios and not knowing where you’re going, you could miss it. Not to worry, once you tell the driver where you’re going he/she will be happy to assist you.
The entrance has a huge and gorgeous sign and you could see that the place is well kept.
Walking through the parking lot up to the main entrance was refreshing. There are flowers and unusual plants along the pathway that reminds you of the beauty of nature.
We started our tour maybe 10 – 15 mins after purchasing the ticket. Our guide was very knowledgeable and allowed us to explore the cave….cautiously, take pictures and even took some for and with us.
What use to be a hip spot for tourists and locals alike when it comes to parties, is now the home of different species of bats and birds.
The cave has a rich history of various settlers using it as a hide out spot, from the Arawaks to the African slaves. You will travel through time with the tour guide as you explore the caves, yes, I said “Caves” because there is more than one.
I love going to history sites such as these as they allow you to appreciate the culture and what ancestors had to experience to shape the nation we live in today.
Take a trip to the Green Grotto Caves if you like a mixtures of nature and history. One more thing, you can only take pictures. Videoing the tour is prohibited, ask why, the answer is very interesting.
