Peeling our skin with its sharp rays, while it made shadows of our bodies walking. The sun reminded us of how far we had to walk to get back to the town. With our backpacks on our backs, we walked briskly to finish our destination.

It was a far journey but as we walked I smiled because traveling all the way to Lover’s Leap was worth every bit of the journey.

In December 2016, I had the opportunity to visit Lover’s Leap. It was nothing less than spectacular. I will warn you though that it might be a bit of hassle to get there.

While planning my trip to tour Jamaica, I decided to stay a night in every parish. When I came to St. Elizabeth, Jamaica, I decided to choose the Ocean Breeze hotel for my lodging area for the night.

Due to uncontrolled circumstances, I wasn’t able to go to the attractions I had planned to visit. Nevertheless, Lover’s Leap just happened to be two minutes away from my hotel.

Fortunately for me, I was able to visit before leaving for the next parish.

If you have reached this far in the article, and have no clue what the Lover’s Leap attraction is about, let me give you a backstory.

History of Lover’s Leap

Lover’s Leap was named after two slave lovers, Mizzy and Tunkey, back in the 18th century. Legend has it that their slave master fell in love with Mizzy and wanted her for himself. He arranged for Tunkey to be sold to another estate but the slave lovers fled to avoid being separated. They were chased to the edge of a cliff and to prevent being caught they choose to end their lives by jumping together.

Alright, now you have some information, let’s get back to what I was talking about.

Lovers’ Leap Amenities

The cliff where the slaves jumped, is gated with a well-kept landscape. The guard at the entrance will guide you on how to get in and where to go. Once you enter the enclosed property, you can follow the pathway that will take you to a building where the tour guides are located.

They are very friendly and always willing to answer your questions. They have a plethora of information about the property and sometimes the information shared at once can be a bit overwhelming. Nevertheless, it is a great experience.

The view from the cliff is to die for; pun intended. Standing on the cliff, you can see both Alligator Pond on the left and Treasure Beach on the right. That is all I will leave with you. You have to see it for yourself to know what I mean. I won’t go any further and spoil the experience for you.

Here is a list of things that is available when you get there:

  • Free Parking
  • Restaurant – (limited spacing so you might have to call if your party is large)
  • A menu with local dishes
  • A small bar
  • Don’t forget the amazing view

If you would like to rent the place for special occasions, you can do so as well.

Where is Lovers’ Leap?

Lovers’ Leap is located in the Yardley Chase District, Saint Elizabeth on the south coast of the island.

I quickly found out that there were numerous ways to get to the Lovers’ Leap after being lost.

I really had no clue whereas I was going as I had copied the wrong address. Coming from Santa Cruz, assuming you are traveling via public transportation, you can take a taxi from there to Watchell, Watchell to Cross Roads, and Cross Roads to Southfield. You can ask the Southfield taxi driver to drop you off at Lovers’ Leap. That was the route I took but there is another route that might be much easier.

Coming from Junction, Saint Elizabeth, you can take a taxi from Junction to Southfield then ask the Southfield taxi driver to drop you off at Lovers Leap.

If you would like more information about Lovers’ Leap, the best people to talk to would be the guys a Lovers’ Leap of course.

The tour costs $400 JMD ($3 USD) and the operating hours are from Mondays – Saturdays, 9 am – 5 pm.
